#Discussion: "Once Upon a Time" and the End of the Line Crossed

Once Upon a Time is not a series that I am at all in love with, but it’s one I can’t hate either. It has potential to be something great, but it doesn't try. On average, I think it’s an interesting take on Fairy Tale characters that has a marginally entertaining first season. But, like most concept series, it suffers from egregious problems in regards to pace, narrative and character development.

I can say this is true of both seasons, but the one thing I cannot blame S1 for is a lack of a goal. It knew where it wanted to go and what it wanted to do with the characters, however clumsily it got to that place. I could tell you what season one was about in a single sentence: “The Evil Queen of Snow White creates a curse that strands famous Fairy Tale in our world to achieve her happy ending”. There’s more to it, but that alone would spark interest in someone and get them to watch it.

Season two, on the other hand? It’s probably the finest example sequelitis and too much creative freedom without someone to rein it in with a leash and bullwhip. You cannot sum this shit up in a single sentence because that sentence loses its train of thought and runs through a field like Spaz of Jazz Jackrabbit 2 on a sugar rush. It is the epitome of the George Lucas Syndrome: all quantity, no quality and squandered ideas.

Once Upon a Time | As previously previewed, Regina is most definitely out for blood, having realized that Mary Margaret orchestrated Cora’s death. But how exactly will the Evil Queen go about exacting her revenge? “I honestly can’t say — it’ll just give away too much,” Lana Parrilla (sorta) tells us. “But I think she’s going to ‘rely a little bit on the universe’ and let things unfold as they’re meant to be.” Said differently: “She’s going to stalk her for a little bit, and then try to take her down.” (Psst, more Once scoop below.) Tamara has a tumbleblog now. No idea how long it'll last considering her status, but I thought it was interesting that there already people supporting her.

New OUaT Tamara clue

[livejournal.com profile] jaeliyah: Thoughts? Mostly, I'm just heaving a disappointed sigh that the Snow White heroine apparently needs another PoC foil. I know it could be a red herring, but it's not like Once Upon a Time is known for subtlety. Also, that super questionable hashtag is less a reference to Tamara than to Snow White's latest storyline, but it was brought up in the comments and has since been changed to #DarkHeart.

So, did anything ever come of that "Tamara" character on "Once Upon a Time"? No one I can find on that POS version of the tag search seems to be even talking about her much less screencaping or .gif'ing her on tumblr. I figure she's not Tiana, but I'm still interested all the same. And this can answered by anyone who's watched the show, btw.

Scoop: Once Upon a Time Casts Walking Dead Actress — But Who Is She Playing?

Once Upon a Time is adding Sonequa Martin-Green to its ranks for Season 2 — if not beyond.

TVLine has learned that the actress, whose TV credits include The Walking Dead and The Good Wife, will appear this season in multiple episodes as Tamara. No further details on the character were made available, though TVLine’s previous intel indicates that Once was initially angling to cast an African-American with a British accent in the part, and that Tamara could spill over into Season 3 of the ABC drama.

Martin-Green recently debuted on The Walking Dead, just before the hiatus, as Sasha, one of the prison newcomers Carl sequestered from his group. On The Good Wife, she enjoyed a run as Courtney, the assistant Alicia poached from Martha Plimpton’s Patti Nyholm. She also played Army Wives‘ Kanessa. SOURCE: 1, 2, 3

New Female character to get reoccurring role in "Once Upon a Time"

SO, I'VE long since stopped watching Once Upon a Time as to further prevent the death of precious brain cells via a onset of tedium, mediocre writing and acting. However, this little anecdote has a certain POC Disney fandom in a tizzy and though I doubt anything will actually ever come from it, it'll be interesting to see how this turns out as the character is a Woman of Color, presumably with a reoccurring role status.

Info's behind the cut.

Let's countdown the episodes before their death, shall we? )
