I only just heard about this art series recently, but regarding Tiana - I'm really glad she got a new design, although I think the mascot one was pretty appropriate too. I think Disney shares part of the blame, seeing how Tiana is the only heroine who spends most of her movie as an animal. :/
I think the Mulan-as-samurai is okay too. The artist obviously knows that Chinese =/= Japanese, and I think Mulan works best with physical, sword-wielding classes anyway (so Warrior, Samurai, or Dark Knight). And it's not like Japanese culture wasn't influenced by Chinese culture either. So yeah, I find it an appropriate choice!
I think my favorite one of the set is Esmeralda. I love the costume design on that one!
