First look at Alexandra Metz as Rapunzel in "Once Upon a Time"

blackfashion:

ABC’s Once Upon a Time first look at Rapunzel.

"We went a little darker and freakier," says executive producer Edward Kitsis. "A little more horror story in the vein of [the 2004 movie] The Grudge.”

The long-locked damsel played by Alexandra Metz will be visited in her tower by Prince Charming as well as a mysterious hooded menace.

Unfortunately, it appears that Rapunzel will not be a recurring character on the show. As appears to be par for the course with characters of color on the show, from what I have read.

Actress Alexandra Metz will play the iconic fairy-tale character on the ABC drama

Rapunzel is heading to Storybrooke.

The Originals actress Alexandra Metz has been cast as the fairy-tale character in the third season on ABC’s Once Upon a Time, The Hollywood Reporter confirms.

Rapunzel will be introduced into the Once Upon a Time universe in the 14th episode, as TVLine first reported. Metz currently is booked for one episode. (SOURCE)

Naturally, the OUAT fandom is already losing their shit over this casting. It's probably just gonna be Lancelot all over again tho.

More Info on the "Beautiful African American Woman" appearing in "Once Upon a Time"

Scoop: Once Upon a Time Casts Walking Dead Actress — But Who Is She Playing?

Once Upon a Time is adding Sonequa Martin-Green to its ranks for Season 2 — if not beyond.

TVLine has learned that the actress, whose TV credits include The Walking Dead and The Good Wife, will appear this season in multiple episodes as Tamara. No further details on the character were made available, though TVLine’s previous intel indicates that Once was initially angling to cast an African-American with a British accent in the part, and that Tamara could spill over into Season 3 of the ABC drama.

Martin-Green recently debuted on The Walking Dead, just before the hiatus, as Sasha, one of the prison newcomers Carl sequestered from his group. On The Good Wife, she enjoyed a run as Courtney, the assistant Alicia poached from Martha Plimpton’s Patti Nyholm. She also played Army Wives‘ Kanessa. SOURCE: 1, 2, 3

New Female character to get reoccurring role in "Once Upon a Time"

SO, I'VE long since stopped watching Once Upon a Time as to further prevent the death of precious brain cells via a onset of tedium, mediocre writing and acting. However, this little anecdote has a certain POC Disney fandom in a tizzy and though I doubt anything will actually ever come from it, it'll be interesting to see how this turns out as the character is a Woman of Color, presumably with a reoccurring role status.

Info's behind the cut.

Let's countdown the episodes before their death, shall we? )

Production Photography from "Beauty and the Beast" Broadway

I stumbled upon more production photography from Toni Braxton's stint as Belle in the Broadway version of "Beauty and the Beast". I wish there were higher quality material out there for this version of the film.

Russell Means, Who Clashed With Law As He Fought for Indians, Is Dead at 72

Russell C. Means, the charismatic Oglala Sioux who helped revive the warrior image of the American Indian in the 1970s with guerrilla-tactic protests that called attention to the nation’s history of injustices against its indigenous peoples, died on Monday at his ranch in Porcupine, S.D., on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. He was 72.

The cause was esophageal cancer, which had spread recently to his tongue, lymph nodes and lungs, said Glenn Morris, Mr. Means’s legal representative. The CW's "Beauty and Beast (2012-Present)"

Beauty and the Beast 1.03 ‘All In’ Stills. (Patch 1 of 2)
Source

The first of a set of promo pictures from the new CW television series, Beauty and the Beast, a reboot of the 1980s television series. In this series, police detective Catherine Chandler is played by Kristen Kreuk and her fellow detective, Tess Vargas, is played by Nina Lisandrello.

The role of Catherine Chandler was originated by a white actress in the 1980s (Linda Hamilton) and the role of Tess Vargas is written on IMDB as “Tess O’Malley,” suggesting that the character was originally supposed to be Irish. So here we have two “racebent” roles, and the result is a show that features two women of color working in the police force as partners!

At the ComicCon panel for Beauty and the Beast, the showrunners explained that this pairing exists in the real world in police forces, but is something that is rarely, if ever, depicted. (The trope that women doing police work or really, any kind of work, are partnered up with a man.) The showrunners are also women and they plan on addressing some of the sexism that women who are police officers experience through Catherine’s story. [X]

The "Ballad of Mulan" comes to life through China's Zhao Wei

MULAN FANS ARE are understandably perplexed and excited for the arrival of Disney's Fa Mulan on Once Upon a Time and they undoubtedly know about the poem of Hua Mulan, the inspiration behind the 1998 Disney film, but here's a little known Chinese film you may not have seen. Mulan (or Hua Mulan) is yet another adaptation of the "Ballad of Hua Mulan" the ancient Chinese Poem that tells the tale of a young woman who joins the army in her father's stead and saves China. However, it makes no apparent attempts to disguise the fact that Mulan is a woman, leading an army and fighting as of now (for me) nondescript enemy (presumably lead by a Bjork-feathered villain with paperback romance hair). I haven't seen it yet, but the movie looks gorgeous (and good to boot).

Mulan (simplified Chinese: 花木兰; traditional Chinese: 花木蘭; pinyin: Huā Mùlán) is a 2009 Chinese film starring Zhao Wei as the titular protagonist. The director, Jingle Ma, has explained that this film is vastly different from the 1998 Walt Disney animated film and adheres more to his imagination. Zhao Wei was cast by Ma as Hua Mulan over actresses Zhang Ziyi, Michelle Yeoh, and Liu Yifei, who were reportedly also considered for the role. The Russian singer Vitas also has a role in this film and helped publicize the film by providing a song titled Beneath the Glory for the film score.

'Order Of The Seven': Disney's Snow White Retelling Moving Forward

Sure, there are already two live action Snow White films in production, but if there's any studio that knows that fairytale, it's Disney. As such, it shouldn't be terribly unexpected that the House of Mouse would be coming out with its own retelling of the princess and dwarves story; what they're doing with it, however, may be a bit of a surprise.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio is moving forward with its far east, warrior-focused version of the tale; now called "The Order of the Seven," it's been in development for years, and, so says THR, will actually minimize the aspects associated with the Grimm legend. It will be trading those trappings for an ancient action storyline that will feature a band of warriors from around the world that, once downtrodden, are galvanized by meeting an English woman in China.
