#Character Spotlight: Mermaid Collection by FERNL @deviantArt.com

IF THERE'S ANYTHING DeciantART user FERNL loves to do, its re-imagine Disney characters as color coded mermaids --- obviously stemming from an adoration of 1989's The Little Mermaid. The following pieces below are a collection of Disney Heroes and Disney Heroines as the aforementioned.

Best Of Rifftrax: Aladdin (if it actually existed)

as the title suggest. The guys at Rifftrax (Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbett) have never done a riff of Aladdin. I just took some jokes from some of the rifftrax I have and put them over scenes of Aladdin. I first got the idea when I saw "The best of Rifftrax: Metroid Prime Trilogy" and thought it'd be cool to try and do something like that and after watching the lamp getting scene inside the cave of wonders and how it was pretty much the first scene of Raiders Of The Lost Ark, that's where this joke came from at 3:36 - 3:39 and I went from there. #Discussion: Disney, Sexism and Racism

BY DREKI

Nathyn/Nome recently posted a commentary on zan blog about how Disney is going to go off princesses, but we really don’t need any more of their princesses anyways. One of the commentors disagrees with zan complaint of Mulan, but added “I’m more worried about the ethnocentrism. In America, we love to read Woman Warrior at college and make fun of how sexist they are in China and how enlightened we are in the Occident. We also love to appropriate oriental stories, both mythological and contemporary, to give them the Hollywood treatment.”

This is something that is definitely important to notice. China is not the only country to have problems with subjugating women. The US did it, and there are still problems in the present (trigger warning: rape, rape apologism). China also doesn’t have a homogenous history of constantly oppressing women, they also had Empress Wu who improved the status of women, had scholars write history of women, invented entirely new characters to show her greatness, and declared herself Maitreya Buddha, 900 years before Queen Elizabeth. The point- everywhere has good and bad parts of its history, and it’s problematic to think otherwise.

Mothers and Father's Day Article on the role of Disney parents

2. The "Overbearing" Father

This type of father is one many are familiar with in their own lives; they want the best for their children but as a result can come off controlling. These fathers’ overbearing attitude offers a plot device for the movie. In Pocahontas, her father urges her to marry Kocoum even though she is reluctant to do so. In Aladdin, Jasmine’s dad is also obsessed with her getting married (seriously though, these girls are still teenagers). Mulan’s father too wishes her to become a respectful lady and make a good match, however he seems to accept her for who she is a bit more than the other fathers in this category. Regardless of the extent, each of these fathers present a reason for these characters to work harder for what they want, despite the consequences.

Aladdin Coming to Broadway

Last night, Alan Menken held an intimate performance as part of the ‘Destination D’ event at the Disneyland Resort, held by Disney D23, the official fan club of The Walt Disney Company. After wowing the attending crowd with music from decades of his Tony, Grammy and Oscar-winning career, he closed the show with ‘Proud of Your Boy,’ a song that was intended for the original 1992 film, but was cut due to story changes.

It was when introducing the song that Menken mentioned the musical is currently being tweaked for a Broadway run, according to reports from attendees.

"Aladdin" and "Pocahontas" Blu-Ray DVD Announcements

According to Blu-Ray.com, 1992's Aladdin will be released on Disney's "Diamond Edition" Blu Ray sometime during the Spring of 2013 as to celebrate its 20th Anniversary. For whatever reason there is no English DVD Trailer for either this or the other announcement trailers declaring the other animated features Blu-Ray debuts, so this'll have to do. Be sure to check out the Blu-Ray announcement DVD for the bundle back for Pocahontas and Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World which have presumably out and purchaseable since August 21st, 2012.
